Dear Inner Circle,
No one has more fun than a Grandfather. I was playing hide and seek with my 7 year old granddaughter on Saturday and instead of yelling, “Here I come ready or not,” I yelled, “Say, ‘wow’ if you like ice-cream.” A little voice came from behind a tree, “Wow!”
I usually fill this note with stories that invite you to stop for a second and be captured by the beauty that is found on the streets of Kings Cross. Today, I’m issuing an invitation of a different kind. I’m inviting you be part of our ‘wow’ moment. It is 50 years since Ted Noffs first walked into what was then just an apartment building and started The Wayside Chapel. Fifty years of serving love and hope to the community is a moment worth celebrating and so it is with great joy that I fill this note with invitations to be part of our anniversary. Many people reply to this note each week saying they’ve never met me and they’ve never been to Wayside, but they feel connected to our work and our mission. Well, this is your chance to be part of our community and to celebrate something special.
The main event is Celebration Sunday. We’re hosting a huge street carnival on Sunday, 13 April and issuing an invitation to all of Sydney to come along. The day starts at 10am with a special church service. Bill Crews will tell us some stories about the old days and Matt Noffs will pay tribute to his grandfather. The service will be followed by entertainment and activities for the whole family. There will be jumping castles and a petting zoo, a 60s dress up photo booth, art installations, cooking demonstrations by our ambassador Indira Naidoo, Devonshire tea on the balcony, gardening and beekeeping workshops on the rooftop, and a photo and art exhibition. I would be honoured to see you there.
We also have a series of smaller events going on that we would love you to come along to. Click here for details. On Monday, 7 April at 6pm we're inviting you to Wayside Voices: Slam Poetry and Story-Telling. Laugh, cry and be inspired as members of the Wayside community take to the stage to draw on their personal experiences to share their stories and recite original poetry.
On Tuesday, 8 April, we'd love for you to swing by Wayside on your way to work and get yourself one of our legendary bacon and egg rolls. Our dedicated volunteers are going to attempt to break their record by selling 100 bacon and egg rolls in one morning.
On the evening of Wednesday, 9 April, we'll be turning our rooftop balcony into an outdoor cinema for a special screening of the 1980s classic, The Blues Brothers. There are only a couple of tickets left so be quick. Buy them here.
Every Thursday we have a corporate group come in and cook and serve lunch for about 60 of our visitors. On Thursday, 10 April at 1pm we'll be hosting a special 50th anniversary lunch. Una Hanlon, who is is our Senior Community Worker and also happens to be one of the best Northern Soul dancers in Australia, will be playing some soul classics and our dedicated volunteers from Salesforce will be serving lunch. All welcome.
There are thousands of people who have volunteered at Wayside over the past 50 years and on Friday, 11 April we're hosting a Volunteer Harbour Cruise to celebrate our rich history. Past and present volunteers, along with their friends and family, are invited on a cruise on Sydney Harbour to raise money for The Wayside Chapel. Buy your tickets here.
If you don't live in Sydney or you can't make it to any of the events, you can still get involved by hosting a birthday party in our honour and raising some money while you're at it. We've made it easy for you to raise funds to support our work. Register your party and we will send you out as many 50th Anniversary red heart shaped lollipops as you think you can sell for $1 each to help us raise the $30,000 we need. You can sell them in your offices or at schools. More details here.
Thank you for being part of this inner circle and thank you for being part of our 50th anniversary,
