Inner Circle

Dear Inner Circle,

Someone spilled a fair bit of talcum powder in one of our showers. The next person in was heard yelling, “What a waste”. Somewhere in Kings Cross today is someone who can’t get the sweet smell out of their nostrils.

A young but sickly looking woman saw me this week after making an appointment some weeks ago. She’s been a member of this inner circle for some time and neither of us knew how this had happened. She sat in my office shaking for what would have been perhaps 10 minutes before a single word could be said. She somehow knew that our meeting would be significant although I had no idea and knew nothing but a name in my diary. Once we got going, a volcanic eruption of words and emotions flew into the air. I contributed nearly nothing except to be amazed that this stranger chose this moment to begin to claim her life back. Her father was a prominent community member in a country town and yet his cruelty knew no limits. As a little girl, the woman was many times horsewhipped by her angry and drunk father. As a little girl she was often thrown out of the house and locked in a shed all night. She was only the age that of my granddaughters and I could hardly bare to imagine what I was hearing. By the time she walked out of the room, we both knew that a corner had been turned. A therapist friend agreed to work from this point and if we never meet again, we’ll both know that something happened bigger than the both of us this week. She gave permission for me to tell this much of her story.

Massive thanks for all the undies, bras and toiletries that are flowing through our front door. We put a shout out on Facebook and it was shared 912 times, reaching 50,000 people. Every day more gifts of love arrive. Our deepest thanks to you all and our assurance that nothing says, “I love you” like a clean pair of undies.

If you want to continue the goodwill, it's not too late to help Wayside receive up to $50,000 from Dick Smith's $1million giveaway to charities. Dick Smith is a dear friend and one of the most generous people I've ever met. All you have to do is send a photo of yourself with a Dick Smith Foods product via email or text to, making sure you nominate The Wayside Chapel with your submission. Please send your photos before the end of June.

Walking home last night a tall, well-dressed man walked up behind me and said, “I think I’m reading your book just now”. He explained that a little while ago he broke his leg and was pretty miserable and unable to do much and that my book came at just the right time. We talked for about 5 minutes. I never use the word, “author” of myself as I don’t think of myself as such but encounters like this one are a real thrill. I’m getting more feedback about the book now than I had at the time of its release. The book is still available in Big W or online here and we have some for sale in our Op Shop at Wayside.

A young woman with paralysing beauty sat in front of me this morning and said, “I don’t know anyone with a happy marriage”. “Well,” I said, “you do now”.

Thanks for being part of our inner circle,

That’s enough for now. Thanks for being part of our inner circle.
